The Connection
What Is the Gut-Skin Axis?
The gut-skin axis is the bidirectional communication pathway between the gut microbiome and skin health. It is not a metaphor — it is a biological mechanism involving immune regulation, inflammatory signalling, and the microbial metabolites produced in the gut that circulate systemically and influence skin cell behaviour.
Inflammation
A disrupted gut microbiome increases systemic inflammation — including the pro-inflammatory cytokines that drive acne, atopic dermatitis, redness and accelerated skin ageing.
Microbiome → Skin
Specific probiotic strains produce short-chain fatty acids and antimicrobial compounds in the gut that influence skin barrier function, sebum regulation and immune response at the skin level.
Oral, Not Topical
The ProBeautyShield strains work through oral intake — not topical application. The clinical studies used capsules taken daily, with skin outcomes assessed by instrumental measurement and clinical scoring.

The ProBeautyShield complex contains three strains — two of which are present in V-IOTIC. Both carry specific, patented strain codes and have been studied together across multiple published trials spanning atopic dermatitis, acne in both EMEA and APAC populations, and mature skin ageing.

L. plantarum PBS067 & L. rhamnosus LRH020 — the gut-skin strains in V-IOTIC
These two strains have been studied in four randomised clinical trials for skin-specific outcomes. They are present in V-IOTIC alongside L. crispatus LCR031, L. reuteri PBS072 and B. animalis subsp. lactis BL050 — each strain traceable, each with a specific evidenced purpose. The ProBeautyShield complex has won the Nutra Ingredients USA Award in 2022, 2024 and been a finalist in 2019.
It is worth noting that L. plantarum PBS067 and L. rhamnosus LRH020 also appear in the SmilinGut gut health complex and the Femme vaginal health complex — they are the same specific strains, studied across three different ecosystems. Their presence in V-IOTIC is not redundant. It reflects the multi-system role these strains play in the body.

The Skin Conditions Studied Across Four Clinical Trials
The ProBeautyShield clinical programme is unusually comprehensive. Most probiotic skin ingredients are backed by one study. These strains have been studied in four separate RDBPC trials across different conditions, populations and geographies — all using instrumental measurement, not just self-report.
Atopic Dermatitis — Eczema
80 adults with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis SCORAD 15–25. 8-week treatment with 4-week follow-up. Outcomes: skin hydration, Transepidermal Water Loss TEWL, SCORAD clinical scoring. Published in European Journal of Dermatology 2021.
Acne — EMEA
80 adults aged 18–50 with acne severity 1–3 IGA scale. 8-week treatment. Outcomes: skin sebum, acneic lesion count, comedone count. Published in Our Dermatology Online 2022.
Acne — APAC
64 female adults aged 18–50 in Asia-Pacific with acne severity 1–3 IGA scale. 8-week treatment with 14-day follow-up. Outcomes: skin hydration, sebum content. Manuscript under review.
Mature Skin & Ageing
66 healthy Caucasian subjects aged 40–65 with crow's feet wrinkles. 8-week treatment with 4-week follow-up. Outcomes: wrinkle depth, skin density, hydration, TEWL. Manuscript under submission.
The Clinical Evidence
What the ProBeautyShield Studies Reported
All four studies used randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled methodology — the gold standard for clinical research. Skin outcomes were assessed using instrumental measurement not self-report alone at multiple timepoints. Here is what the data reported.
Skin hydration improved by over 30% in atopic dermatitis subjects
In the atopic dermatitis trial, the ProBeautyShield strains improved skin hydration by over 30% at the end of the 8-week treatment period, with a positive trend maintained through the 4-week follow-up. SCORAD clinical scores — the standard measure of atopic dermatitis severity — showed significant reduction at T28, T56 and T84 compared to placebo p<0.001.
Skin barrier integrity improved — Transepidermal Water Loss reduced by 20%
Transepidermal Water Loss TEWL is the rate at which water escapes through the skin — a direct measure of skin barrier integrity. A 20% reduction in TEWL at T56 indicates a meaningfully stronger skin barrier in the active group. This effect persisted through the follow-up period, suggesting lasting structural improvement rather than temporary surface hydration.
Skin sebum reduced by up to 25% in acne study subjects
In the EMEA acne trial, the ProBeautyShield strains remarkably reduced skin sebum throughout the study period — reaching up to -25% reduction compared to baseline in the active group, versus no significant change in placebo. Acneic lesion counts and comedone counts also showed consistent reduction at both T28 and T56 p<0.05.
Skin moisturisation increased by 15% in APAC acne trial — persisting at follow-up
In the APAC acne study, a significant increase in skin moisturisation was observed after 28 days that persisted through to T70 the follow-up period at +15%. Sebum content was reduced by almost 20% after two months. This cross-regional consistency — the same strains showing similar outcomes in both European and Asian populations — strengthens the evidence base considerably.
Wrinkle depth reduced and skin density increased in mature skin subjects
In the mature skin trial of adults aged 40–65, probiotic intake significantly reduced wrinkle depth at T28, T56 and T84 compared to T0 — reaching approximately -14% at T56. Skin density increased significantly after 56 days, with this effect sustained through the follow-up period. The placebo group showed no meaningful change on either measure.

Why Biotin Is in V-IOTIC — and Why It Matters for Skin
One of the unique properties of the ProBeautyShield strains is their capacity for self-production of Biotin and other B-group vitamins in the gut. How Long Does It Take?
28+
Days minimum — 56 days for full clinical benefit
The ProBeautyShield clinical studies used a minimum 28-day protocol, with the most significant outcomes at T56 8 weeks. Some measures — such as skin hydration in the APAC trial — showed meaningful improvements at 28 days, but wrinkle depth, skin density and barrier integrity outcomes were strongest at 56 days and sustained through follow-up. Skin health through the gut-skin axis takes time. The data supports consistency over speed.
Topical products can produce surface-level changes quickly. Working through the gut-skin axis is a slower, deeper process — but the clinical data suggests the outcomes are more lasting. Skin density improvements and TEWL reductions were both sustained into the follow-up period after supplementation ended, which is the hallmark of a genuine structural effect rather than a temporary surface result.
